Can I add a camera that's not on the local network? (Yes!)

Yes, it's possible to attach a camera on a different network to your Camio Box. This is possible as long as that camera is at an IP-address that is accessible from Box and exposes an RTSP stream through that address.

What's Needed

  1. Camera IP-Address (or domain-name)

  2. Camera MAC address

  3. Camera RTSP-URL

  4. A registered Camio Box

An RTSP-URL is a URI of the form

Camio Box needs the RTSP-URL to connect to a camera. When a camera is on the same network as your Camio Box, Box will find it and automatically determine the correct RTSP-URL to use. When the camera is not on the same network we cannot do this, so you must supply the RTSP-URL to use.

  1. Go to your page

  2. Scroll to the bottom, and select 'Add Camera (expert mode)'

  3. Enter the MAC address of your Camera.

  4. You will now see a new camera entry on your /boxes page. (see image below)

  5. Enter in a name for the camera, and enter a username and password if they are required for camera access.

  6. Open the 'Advanced Options' section (below the password entry)

  7. Let's say your camera is at IP-address In the RTSP-Server Box, put:

leave {{username}} and {{password}} exactly as is, we will fill in those values with the username/password values you've entered for this camera entry.

  8. Click 'Save' to save the camera entry, then toggle the camera 'On' to connect it to your Box. If all goes well you should see the camera come online in around 10 seconds.

For example, if I'm connecting to a Hikvision DS-2023-I camera at IP and port 1056, I would put the following text in the RTSP-Server box (exactly as below)

Let's say the username and password for this camera are 'admin' and 'admin', then my camera entry on my /boxes page would look like this:
