Why is my iPad camera zoomed-in too close?

Short answer: use the front-facing camera instead of the rear-facing camera.

Long answer: Most rear-facing iPad cameras do not support zooming in video mode, and their default zoom level in video mode is higher than when in photo mode. So if you want the wider angle view, use the front-facing camera of your iPad.

However, according to this article from Apple, "with iPad Air and iPad mini with Retina display, zooming works in video mode as well as photo mode."
