Camio Box Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Q: How many Boxes do I need?
A: Usually 1 Box is sufficient. Each Box handles 3 1080p video streams. You can add multiple Boxes to handle additional cameras.

Q: Does Box need a physical connection to my cameras or NVR?
A: No. Box can be anywhere on your local network. You can attach it to your network router via Ethernet cable or it can connect via WiFi.

Q: Which cameras and NVRs work with Box?
A: Anything that provides access to its H.264 video stream works. See this longer answer.

Q: Does Box upload to the cloud only when an Event (i.e. motion) is detected?
A: Yes and no. Box uploads the high-resolution video only when there is important motion; however Box also uploads accelerated, low-resolution timelapse videos during no-motion periods for continuous coverage.

Q: Is the motion detection automatic?
A: Yes, the Box adapts to each particular video stream to identify significant motion distinct from spurious lighting changes, shadows, or repetitive background noise.

Q: Does Box upload the full resolution video?
A: Yes. Box uploads all important Events in their original resolution. Unimportant Events are uploaded only upon request (i.e. by clicking, sharing, saving an Event). No-motion periods are uploaded as accelerated lo-res timelapse videos.

Q: Does Box discover all my cameras just by connecting it to my network?
A: Yes. Box automatically scans your local network to present you with a list of the cameras found. Then you choose the ones you want to connect to Camio.

Q: Can Box record continuously on local storage too?
A: Yes. You can attach a USB drive to Box or use the larger internal storage of Box Pro.

Q: Is power the only physical connection Box needs?
A: No. In addition to an AC outlet for the power adapter, Box needs an Ethernet cable connection to your local network router.

Q: What's the advantage of Box over connecting each camera directly to the cloud?
A: Full encoded video (vs. snapshots), higher accuracy, 24x7 coverage, and more described in this article
