How do I replace a camera?

The ideal sequence of steps when physically replacing a camera is different when the camera is assigned an ip_address instead of using the camera mac_address to determine its ip_address. Even when your camera is assigned an ip_address, you may still want to make the changes outlined below to avoid confusion caused by mac_address values that no longer match the actual values of the new cameras.

Camera IP is assigned

Technically, you don't have to change anything in your settings. The replacement camera will simply use the same ip_address you had previously assigned even though the replacement's mac_address will no longer match the mac_address in your settings. This "do nothing" options works only when:

  1. you'll never use the old camera again with the account from which it was removed, and
  2. the confusion of seeing old mac_address values that don't match your new cameras is OK, and
  3. other stream settings like the rtsp_path remain unchanged (replacing with same make/model)

Camera IP is known via mac_address

These steps are based on usage of the Camera CSV Import and ensures that you reuse the same camera name even though it has a different mac_address.

  1. Copy the row of the old camera and paste it in a row BELOW the row of the old camera so that the new camera is imported after the old camera is deleted. On the new camera row:
    1. enter the new MAC of the new camera in the column mac_address.
    2. remove the value in the column local_camera_id (so that a new value is generated from the MAC of the new camera).
    3. retain the same camera name used by the old camera.
  2. Delete the old camera:
    1. in the action column of the row containing the old camera, enter the value delete.
  3. Import the CSV at
